Chapter 11

I got home in a few days and Carina and the kids greeted me with joy. There were lots of hugs and kisses, I gave the kids their presents, like I do each time I leave town. Carina and I then moved to the den. She had an iced beer waiting. Thoughtful or manipulative? I sat. she remained standing. I took a sip as she studied my face.

"You're upset," she said.

"I'm hurt," I admitted.

"I thought it was all playful fun."

"I get that," I said. "I'm hurt by Aaron. I understand you were merely enjoying yourself but what he did was betrayal. He was my best friend and he pounced on you."

"He came on strong. I was shocked."

"I never should have told him about Joey."

She stopped, frozen, stunned.

"You told him?"

"I had to talk to somebody not involved."

"What the fuck are you talking about?" she said. "You needed to talk to someone? You got me drunk and pushed me at Nevan. You invited Joey back to our place and shoved me at him. It was obvious you wanted me to act on my feelings so I did. If all this has you so upset you needed to talk to someone, why did you aim me at both men?"

She was right.

"It's exciting to see you aroused," I said, fumbling for an answer and sharing my first thoughts. "How could I know how I would feel after?"

"I'm your wife, Dean. If you need to talk to somebody, you talk to me."

"You're what I needed to talk about, Honey. I needed objectivity."

She laughed.

"All you did was arm the missiles and aim them at me. This explains Aaron's behavior. This explains a lot. Aaron heard I'd fooled around and thought he could do the same. I thought he was so hot for me he was willing to risk everything but he knew he had a good chance before he ever started. He knew things about me that I didn't know about him. I was blind. Do you see how you disadvantaged me?"

Ouch.

"Yes. I'm sorry."

"All this is hard on you? You're good at hiding it. Based on your bedroom performances, I thought what I was doing was the greatest aphrodisiac ever. I play around and you turn into king stud."

"It's complicated," I admitted. "You're hot as hell while it's happening but after, when things calm down, fear creeps in."

She hugged my head against her stomach.

"Should I stop?" she asked. "Give the word and I'll never touch another man. You know that, right?"

"I do."

She held me another minute.

"I'm done with Aaron. This information changes everything. He's a hot fuck but now I know he only made a move because he believed he was sure to succeed. That's not sexy."

"Do me a favor and shine him on. Make him suffer."

She smiled.

"You want him to suffer?"

"Yes. He's an asshole. I can believe he betrayed me like that."

She got a gleam in her eye and I instantly felt bad for Aaron. Carina would make him pay.

We left the den to check on the kids and went on with our day.
